I'm still having a good time with MythTV here... The Knoppmyth box I've been running has been pretty-much rock-solid. My plan to consolidate MythTV onto the Asterisk server just got a healthy kick-along too, with an announcement that the bogus DViCO card I bought last year finally has Linux driver support. Bad news came a couple of days … Continue reading MythTV ups and downs

Tech stuff goes here!
No I did not buy an Apple TV -- but seeing them on the shelves at the local Hardly Normal has got me thinking about the dilemma-in-the-making that is my media centre dream. It all comes down to bandwidth, or lack of it to be specific. Of the two locations at the Crossed Wires campus that ideally … Continue reading My media and Apple TV
Following-on from a discussion on the Linux Australia mailing list, Melissa Draper has commented on her blog on the effectiveness of WoM (word-of-mouth) as a marketing technique for Linux. She raises Apple as a counterpoint to the "WoM is worthless" argument; Apple having spent (possibly) billions of traditional marketing dollars on Macintosh to achieve roughly the … Continue reading Word-of-Mouth for Linux marketing?
After a hiatus that has lasted since I first cut the phone system over to Trixbox (probably a year or more), LDAP caller-ID name lookup is working again on my Asterisk system! A lot easier to maintain than the original version I implemented ages ago, too. A bit of PHP code does the trick! I'm using FreePBX … Continue reading LDAP Caller ID again!
Spurred on by the successes of a couple of guys at work, I've been going through the process of setting up a Linux-based PVR.I've had a tuner card for some time, but my first attempts at getting it to work with MythTV under Gentoo a couple of years ago were less than successful. The final prompter … Continue reading MythTV
For ages I've toyed with running Linux on the ex-lease Sony Vaio I've got. When I first picked it up, Centrino was a dirty word as far as Linux was concerned, so it's been a Windows box all along. But now that the lease is over and it's all mine, I decided to take the plunge. The announcement … Continue reading Edgy comes to visit
Thanks to an article in Linux Journal (I think) a few months ago, I discovered ZCS as a possible webmail/calendaring application. Since it's a bit more than just webmail though, I'll probably have to have a bit of a think about whether it's the right way to go.Ever since I moved the main server off Red … Continue reading Zimbra Collaboration Suite
Never thought I could get this excited about something to do with a Windows server! But there it is -- one of my SLES 9 test servers is now supporting logons from a user account stored in Active Directory, with no Samba in sight! Before you say ANYTHING, this is not an indication that the Crossed Wires … Continue reading Active Directory accounts on Linux
I've been away from SHARE for far too long. It's really great to hear positive things about Linux on zSeries again, rather than the crap I have to put up with at home. In Australia, there is no evangelism of zSeries. There's an attitude bordering on arrogance that seems to say "we're not going to explain zSeries … Continue reading Rebooting my belief system
Passed the Novell Certified Linux Professional practicum (exam) yesterday. w00t! Scored 758 out of 800, which I'm told is a "good pass" (and to date, the highest score amongst my workmates). The exam cops a bit of flack in the community, but I found it okay... So now I'm certified!
